Infinite Shuffle #6: Sad Boy/Girl Autumn
It's okay to not be okay.
Whattup Shufflers! It’s the Sad Boy/Girl edition of Infinite Shuffle Mode!
We are entering a time where usually the weather gets cold and hanging out with your friends happens less and less often. But with everything happening in the world around us, this time might feel even lonelier. Whether you’re going through quarantine sadness, heartbreak sadness, seasonal sadness, or a combination of the three I just want to say that you are not alone and that I hope it gets better for you soon.
This newsletter will be the first of two-part series. One part will be a list of sad songs to get in touch with your emotions and realizing that it’s okay to not be okay. Part 2 (Next week’s newsletter) will be a series of songs that are intended to help provide some uplifting music to help you power through whatever it is you’re going through.
Love you all.
Here is our artist of the week!
Artist of the week: Iann Dior
Iann Dior has been a favorite of mine since 2019. Crashing on the scene with his hit song “Emotions”, Dior hasn’t missed since. He brings true rockstar energy to this rap genre and it shows through how many songs of his are powered by strings. His recent efforts with Machine Gun Kelly, 24KGoldn, KYLE, and POORSTACY are cementing his spot in the music mainstream. You’ve probably heard the song “Mood” somewhere already this year because it’s an absolute banger.
My favorite project of his is our project of the week.
Project of the week: nothings ever good enough
The 8-song 2019 project is a good start to tracking Dior’s evolution and improvement over time. He was solid back then, but you can also tell he’s coming into his own on his more recent projects. You can see why he’s also known as “Sad Boy Dior” through these tracks. I feel like a lot of people started tuning in to his music more in the latter half of 2019. From there he took that and has made it a strong 2020. He had a bright future.
Now it’s time for our songs of the week
Too Young - Post Malone
Post Malone’s 2015-2016 run was special. I don’t care. From #Mood to Boy Bandz and of course White Iverson this man was on fire.
For me, “Too Young” is the song that I’ve put closest to memory over all of these years. This song was not only written as an ode to A$AP Yams, but also ended up being a tragic tribute to a friend of Post’s that was killed by the police a few days later after helping with the lyrics to the song.
I love a lot of Post Malone’s songs for his voice, changing styles, and his vulnerable lyrics. Too Young might be his most powerful song and in my book, he might never top it.
Kurt Hugo Schneider, MAX and Kina Grannis - Earned It (Cover)
I’m a sucker for a good harp cover and Kurt Hugo Schneider doesn’t disappoint. Kina Grannis has a beautiful voice and her Youtube channel is something special. I love The Weeknd’s original version of this, but this cover sticks with me also. IT’S THE HARP BRO THE HARP MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE FOR ME.
This is one of the most elegant sounding covers I’ve ever heard.
Convolk - Black Heart
Convolk is one of my favorite sad boys. The emo trap standout has a bunch of tracks spread out all across the internet. My favorite is the intro track to his 2018 project “Life is going by too quickly” called Black Heart.
I also love his sound on “Dead in December”. He’s one of my go-to artists out now, especially when I’m feeling a little down. Go check him out.
Landon Cube - Makeup
This man can freaking sing. I found out about Landon Cube through his collaborations with Lil Skies in 2018. The earlier stages of Lyrical Lemonades’ rise to dominance are so fascinating. Watching Skies and Cube take “Red Roses” to the next level let us know that these two were here to stay. Every time I see that a song has him on it I get amped because I know that he’s going to bring the heat. He’s forever underrated.
Cube’s last project, Orange, was in 2019 but he’s been dropping tracks here and there to keep us wanting more and more.
Lil Peep - Crybaby
This is the second song from Lil Peep to make the newsletter and with good reason. He was a really talented, groundbreaking individual who gave us vulnerable, authentic lyrics over a mix of two genres I adore. Crybaby is a beautiful, melodic song that makes you miss Lil Peep the more and more you play it.
RIP Lil Peep.
Are You Bored Yet? - Wallows feat. Clairo
You know Clay Jensen from 13 Reasons Why (Dylan Minnette)? Well he’s in a band and they’re pretty good. When I first saw him in this video, I thought he was lip-syncing, but then I saw the Genius Verified and realized that he was actually in the band lol.
That’s all for this newsletter. Instead of a sample of the week, I think I’ll rather share my Sad Boy/Girl Autumn 2020 playlist instead. It’s a big one and new songs are constantly being added so be prepared.
See you next week for Part 2!
