Infinite Shuffle #22: Damaged Disco

Howdy

WHATTUP SHUFFLERS! It’s about that time of the week. I hope you’re having a great one. I had a big week, so it’s nice to decompress and buy some plants for my apartment because I could use the boost. DROP YA PLANT RECS PLEASE.

Artist of the week: Navy Blue

Sage Elsesser, also known as “Navy Blue” is a skater, model, and former roommate of Earl Sweatshirt. The two even have a song together on Earl’s 2018 album. Navy Blue had a packed 2020, dropping not one but two projects. There was his debut LP “Àdá Irin” and his recent project…

Project of the week: Song of Sage: Post Panic!

Wow. This is as complete of an album as it gets. The 18-song project showcases some of the most serene production I’ve heard in a while. Post Panic! is a true experience. An album that really makes you feel like you’re walking around in a movie. I was walking out and about the other day listening to this project. Navy Blue’s voice, flow, and lyrics are ELITE throughout the album. You feel immersed in the sounds of each beat and literally, walk with him as he’s taking you on this incredible journey. My favorite tracks on this are 1491, Breathe with Yasiin Bey, and Back to Basics.

SONGS OF THE WEEK!

Danity Kane - Damaged

DO DO YOU HAVE A FIRST AID KIT HANDY? YOOOOOOO THIS SONG WAS AND STILL IS A BANGER.

I’m definitely putting more 00s bangers on this playlist. Even though most people my age know them, it’s good to put the youth on to one of the most chaotic music decades ever. This generation really won’t know about risking the health and wellbeing of your computer to use Limewire to download a new song that turns out to actually be “Crank Dat” by Soulja Boy. Good times.

Kenny Beats, 03 Greedo, and Freddie Gibbs - Disco Shit

Before 03 Greedo went away for a long prison bid, he supplied us with a ton of good music. His “Netflix and Deal” project with production superstar Kenny Beats was insanely good. Their dope chemistry and a solid Freddie Gibbs feature make for a really catchy song.

P-Lo - Put Me On Somethin' (feat. E-40)

As someone who was an early fan of P-Lo’s work when he was with HBK gang, it’s been awesome to see him break out with his solo work both as a producer and rapper. And of course, when you can get E-40 on the track you know you doing something right. This is from 2017, but I encourage you to check out his recent work as well.

Colbie Caillat - I Never Told You

I hope Colbie Caillat is having a good day. This was that pretend that your high school breakup was the end of the world music. Bruh this ERA WAS SO ICONIC.

Sickick - Mind Games

The mysterious Toronto singer has been on the scene for a while dropping one song at a time for years. What I like to call “The Russ strat”. This man is gifted and I can’t wait to dive deeper into his discography over time. This was my first introduction to his music and I’m excited to hear more.

Sample of the Week: Three Days Grace - The Real You

This 2015 effort from Three Days Grace is buried deep in the album but is important to me for a few reasons. Let’s pay attention to the intro to the song. This is the part that producers Young Cortex and Head used to make one of my favorite Lil Peep-Lil Tracy songs.

God their chemistry was so good man. RIP Lil Peep.
