Project of the week: Free Nationals

The 2019 project is a perfect album to vibe out, open your curtains, and just appreciate life. The tape is jam-packed with features, including the likes of Syd, JID, Kali Uchis, and the late Mac Miller. Every song works on this project, even the song with T.I. on it. Not a slight to T.I. I just didn’t expect him on this project. Anyway, this 13 song 41-minute project has incredible instrumentation and aura and I encourage you to check it out if you haven’t already.

SONGS OF THE WEEK

Medhane - DOLOMEALS

This song is only 1:16 long, but the wordplay, flow, and lyrics of this are so captivating that you find yourself replaying this over and over again since it’s so short. Medhane is up and coming and I can’t wait to hear more from him. His Cold Water project is really solid stuff.

Caleborate - Bank Robber

The beat on this song is ELITE. The 2017 song “Bankrobber” is how I found about the Sacramento rapper. His voice and verses are really good on this track and I think this is a good intro to the rest of his discography. Check it out.

Anita Baker - You Bring Me Joy

I’ve been playing this for a full week. Anita Baker is a special talent. From “Sweet Love” to “Angel” Baker is a FORCE. There’s a reason why she has 8 Grammy’s and five platinum albums. I often wonder what numbers older decades would put up if streams existed.

TheHxliday - Mistakes

If TheHxliday is not included in your new wave playlists then you’re slacking. With Internet Money and Lyrical Lemonade in your corner, you’re destined to do great things. He already has a 2021 project out called Batbxy that you can check out.

Sample of the week: ALL CAPS! by Madvillain

A few days ago, we found out that we lost MF DOOM. I want to focus on the sampling of one of the most recognizable songs from Madvillainy. ALL CAPS, takes the theme song from the 1960s show Ironside. Ironside is a show that stars Raymond Burr (who also played as the iconic Perry Mason). Madlib turned that theme into one of the most iconic beats of all time and MF DOOM went tf in.
