Infinite Shuffle #14: The World On Holiday

Hello

HELLO SHUFFLERS! WELCOME TO THE ALL-CAPS EDITION OF INFINITE SHUFFLE MODE.

Just kidding. Hello. Hope you are well. Welcome to another exciting week of fun musical choices made by yours truly! YEEHAW. Enough of the intro.

Artist of the week: Saint JHN

This man is 3-0 on albums since 2018. The Guyanese rapper/singer from Brooklyn has been one of the most consistent artists of his time. His singing voice is immaculate and his personality on and offstage are mesmerizing. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform in DC in 2018 and he did not disappoint. He played everything and even went out into the crowd to jam with us.

Even then, we knew he was a true superstar in the making.

Project of the week: Collection One

Saint JHN just dropped a very good album in “While the World Was Burning”, but I’m here to talk about Collection One.

13 songs bundled up into pure perfection. Saint JHN showcases all of his abilities in this heavenly project. From “Lust” to “Some Nights” you get a nice even medley of bangers and ballads throughout the project. Before his ‘Roses’ song got remixed and reached 1 billion streams on Spotify, there was this project.

Whenever people ask me what project to start with for Saint JHN’s music I will pick this one every time. It’s a good starting point to mark and track the evolution of his sound over time.

Now for our songs of the week.

Koi - Desperate

Koi is a very interesting up and coming rapper. His song ‘Desperate’ is so catchy and poppy that I can’t shake it out of my head. It’s a short quick song that you’ll find yourself replaying over and over again. A perfect Sad Boy artist.

He also does some music video work with Overcast so expect to hear more from him soon.

Lil Nas X - Holiday

Viral song god Lil Nas X is back with a new hit just in time for the season. And it wouldn’t be a Lil Nas X single without a lit music video.

In the song, he talks about his ability to make hits in any genre, how he memed his way to the top and turning the music industry upside down. I love how he’s still working with Tay Keith and Take a Daytrip, because they all have such great chemistry with each other. Lil Nas X can take over the music conversation anytime he wants and he knows it. He’s that powerful.

Kaytranada (feat. Tinashe) - The Worst In Me

Tinashe and Kaytranada need to keep working together because this song is incredible. Tinashe’s smooth vocals paired with Kaytranada’s incredible unique sound make for a great team. Tinashe’s career resurgence has been a joy to watch over the years. Her 2019 effort “Songs for You” is a really solid album.

Samm Henshaw - The World Is Mine

I found out about this song because it’s the theme song for the new “Alex Rider" series. If you enjoyed the Alex Rider books, you’ll like the show as well, but I want to talk about how Henshaw’s voice really gets you excited for each and every episode.

He sounds like a gospel singer that got a hold of a James Bond beat and was like “I can do this shit too”. I love it.

Sample of the week - Summer Nights by Lonnie Liston Smith and The Cosmic Echoes

Joey BadA$$ gave us a classic in his 1999 mixtape, and his intro “Summer Knights” is the perfect start to this project. The sample comes from “Summer Nights”, the 1975 dreamy song that Joey effortless floats on.

Shoutout to Chuck Strangers for being able to flip this.
